Panasonic Booth Interview: Exploring the Latest Cameras
I’m here at the Panasonic booth with Brian, who’s about to show us some exciting new gear. Let’s dive right in!
Panasonic GH5S: A Low-Light Powerhouse
Brian: Let me start with the GH5S, our low-light Micro Four Thirds camera, paired with the latest 10-25mm f/1.7 cine lens.
- Lens Design: This lens is a collaboration between Panasonic and Leica. Leica provides the high-quality German glass, while Panasonic handles the housing and electronics.
- Video Capabilities: The GH5S offers 4K at 60fps, 10-bit 4:2:2 internal recording, no recording time limit, and enhanced low-light performance—perfect for filmmakers.
- Battery Life: It lasts approximately 1 to 1.5 hours, depending on usage.
Introducing the Panasonic S1: A Full-Frame Contender
Brian: Over here, we have the Panasonic Lumix S1, our latest full-frame camera equipped with a 24-105mm lens.
- Top of the Line Hybrid Camera: It is currently the only DSC (Digital Still Camera) hybrid that can shoot 4K 60fps, 10-bit 4:2:2 internally.
- Unlimited Recording: As long as you have power and memory, you can keep shooting.
Me: I wasn’t aware of the S1—Panasonic is making big moves in the industry!
Brian: Absolutely! While Panasonic is still gaining traction in South Africa, globally, we are a major player in DSC cameras and full-frame technology. The S1 launched in May, so it’s still new to the market.
Understanding the L-Mount System
Me: The S1 is a full-frame camera, but does it use the same Micro Four Thirds mount?
Brian: Good question! The S1 uses the L-Mount, which was originally developed by Leica for their SL cameras. Now, Sigma, Panasonic, and Leica have formed the L-Mount Alliance, meaning all three brands produce lenses for this mount.
- Available Lenses:
- Leica: 8 lenses
- Panasonic: Currently 3, with 2 more launching soon
- Sigma: Recently released 3 lenses and is planning a full lineup, including all their prime lenses by the end of 2019 and zoom lenses in 2020.
- Adapters: There is already an EF-to-L-Mount adapter (MC-21), and Metabones is working on a PL and EF adapter. Currently, Nikon and PL adapters are available.
Me: That’s great because many filmmakers want to use their existing lenses when upgrading cameras!
Cinematic Capabilities & Industry Approval
Me: The GH5 has always been known for its smooth 120fps slow-motion footage in 1080p and flip-out screen, making it great for both vlogging and professional filmmaking. How does the S1 compare?
Brian: The S1 is built for high-end production. It delivers over 14 stops of dynamic range, similar to our Panasonic VariCam—a highly regarded cinema camera. It also comes with V-Log for professional color grading.
- V-Log Availability: Right now, V-Log is free with the S1, but after August, it will be a paid upgrade.
Me: That’s impressive. The GH5 is already BBC-approved for broadcast production, which says a lot about its quality!
Pricing and Market Comparison
Me: What’s the price difference between the GH5S and the S1?
Brian: Here’s a general pricing breakdown:
- Panasonic S1 (Body Only): ±R40,000 (Standard Price: ±R47,600)
- Panasonic GH5S (Body Only): ±R38,000 (Standard Price: ±R43,000)
These prices are approximate and depend on the retailer.
Final Thoughts
This has been an exciting look at Panasonic’s latest cameras! The GH5S remains a solid choice for indie filmmakers, while the S1 offers full-frame quality for those moving into cinematic production.
Big thanks to Brian for sharing his insights. We’ll explore more at the Panasonic booth—stay tuned for more updates! 🚀
Until next time, peace out! 🎥✨
